The NCSU faculty introduced OPNET software into the classroom as early as 1995. It is currently being used by PhD students and faculty members for their research. OPNET is also used the NCSU networking curriculum; from advanced undergraduate courses to introductory graduate courses to advanced graduate courses such as mobile wireless communication. To compete in today's dynamic workforce, modeling has become a required skill. OPNET sets the standard.
Some indication of the extent to which OPNET is part of the research and teaching fabric at NCSU is given by the following papers that have appeared:
- Intelligent Jamming in Wireless Networks with Applications to 802.11b and Other Networks
- Simple Algorithm for Outdoor Localization of Wireless Sensor Networks with Inaccurate Range Measurements
- Simulation-based Analysis of a Localization Algorithm for Wireless Ad-Hoc Sensor Networks
- The Nominal Capacity of Wireless Mesh Networks
- Jamming Vulnerabilities of IEEE 802.11e
